Embracing Diversity: Understanding the Somali Culture for Improved SUD Prevention and Treatment

  • This 1/2-hour free continuing education on cultural competency training is one of a series that covers introductory information about several Minnesota cultures and the essential concepts and practices to promote cultural competence in substance use prevention and treatment. Funding for this training is made possible through a grant from the Minnesota Department of Human Services.

  • Participants will explore an introduction to several cultures and learn about the importance of cultural competence, develop self-awareness, and learn prevention and treatment considerations in culturally competent practice.

  • Overview of Somali history and cultural practices relating to SUD prevention and treatment.
  • Respecting participants’ cultural beliefs and practices while maintaining professional standards.

  • Strategies in working with Somali participants, families, and the community.

Here is how the presentations are structured:

  1. Watch a video. The length of each video varies, but you are encouraged to watch it in one session. If you exit the video before watching it all the way through, the next time you sign, you’ll be brought back to the beginning and have to watch the entire video again.
  2. View the Resource. Each presentation includes a Resource, wish is a series of slides shown during the video. You can review the slides by pressing the Resource
  3. Take the Knowledge Check. Each presentation concludes with a series of questions to assess your understanding of the videos content. You must pass the Knowledge Check to obtain your Completion Certificate and CEUs. If you fail, press the Retry button to retake the Knowledge Check. You can Retry as many times as needed until you pass.
